Two for Tuesday, Dec 1

Mountainair meetings that is...

11:30 am - 12:30 pm, Chamber of Commerce. Election Meeting

Alert ~ Dec 1 election meeting of the Mountainair Chamber of Commerce will be held in the back room of the Alpine Alley as the Shaffer Dining Room is currently closed.

Agenda ~  election 2010 Board and officers. Slate not available at this time: 2009 board members and officers not standing for re-election: Kevin Turner (President), Bert Herrman (Secretary), Dennis Fulfer (Treasurer). Presumably, the floor will be open for nominations. Nominating and nominees must be members in good standing. Acceptance of nomination in writing is required for any candidates not present but nominated from the floor.

Since the by-laws do not stipulate a length of membership requirement for voting or standing for office, it is to be assumed that potential members joining at the meeting will, in the absence of stipulations to the contrary, be eligible to vote and even stand for office. However, it would seem prudent and advisable to confirm this by directing queries to the CoC executive committee, listed on the CoC website.

Call 847-0248 or email mcc@mountainairchamber.com or turnerinnandrvpark@yahoo.com for more information.

East Thunderbird Rx a Success

Arlene T Perea, atperea@fs.fed.us, writes:

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you a brief update on the East Thunderbird Prescribed burn today.  Everything went very well.  Ignitions ended around 4pm.  Smoke was very visible throughout the Manzano Mountains and Estancia Valley, but the burn was definitely a success.  Approximately 90 of the estimated 120 planned acres were burned.  The decision was made to hold off on the last 30-40 acres until conditions allow it to burn cooler as it is a red needle slash area.  Overall, burn managers were very pleased and felt that all burn objectives were met.  Fire personnel will continue monitoring and mopping up the fire area throughout the week.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me or respond to this email.

Thank you to those of you who called the office and provided new email contact information.  To those of you who are new to my list as of this evening, please respond to this email to let me know that you were properly added to my email contact list.  You will now continue to receive any district updates that I send out, including prescribed fire information.

Thanks  -  Arlene

East Thunderbird Prescribed Fire

From Arlene T Perea, atperea@fs.fed.us, Monday, November 09, 2009 4:38 PM

East Thunderbird Prescribed Burn Scheduled

The Mountainair Ranger District has been closely monitoring fuel and weather conditions. It now seems that we have hit the proper ventilation categories that are conducive to burning. The Mountainair Ranger District will be implementing the East Thunderbird Prescribed Burn.

The burn will be in a fuel wood area locally known as the Thunderbird area. This area was thinned within the Thunderbird Ecosystem Management area south of Forest Road #275 about 10 miles northwest of Mountainair. The burn is planned for November 10th and 11th. We will be burning as weather and ventilation allow and when the proper fire personnel are in place. For more information call 505-847-2990 or email atperea@fs.fed.us

Prescribed burning planned

From Arlene Perea, Information, Mountainair District, Forest Service

As was stated in my news release last week, we are still planning two prescribed burns on the district.  The weather window that we are waiting for is a very small window, not because of fire danger, but because of smoke.  We are, so far, not falling within the proper ventilation categories to burn.  We will continue monitoring the ventilation categories closely.  This being the case, I just wanted everyone to be aware that there is the possibility of burning at a moments notice as long as we have the proper personnel and resources in place.  We know that Wednesday is now out of the question, but we will be looking for a burn window throughout the end of the week and weekend.  I will send out another email if we hit our window and are able to burn.  I will also be calling residents who live in close proximity of the burn.  As always, feel free to call me or reply to this email with any comments or concerns.

NEW MEXICANS NEEDED FOR FOREST SERVICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Forest Service is seeking people to serve on new Resource Advisory Committees (RAC) in New Mexico under provisions of Title II of the Secure Rural Schools Act of 2008.   Nominations are due to the appropriate RAC Coordinator by November 16, 2009.

Fourteen counties in New Mexico elected to receive over $1.56 million in 2009 and continued amounts for the next three years to be used on a variety of projects on national forests.

The legislation requires the Forest Service, working with the counties, to establish Resource Advisory Committees made up of defined, diverse, 15-member RACs with a formal charter.  The charter establishing the RACs will soon be approved by the Secretary of Agriculture and the Forest Service is now recruiting RAC members.

RAC nominees will be forwarded to the Secretary who appoints members to a four-year term following background checks.  The RACs convene, propose and review project proposals and make recommendations to the local Forest Service Designated Federal Official (DFO) on how funds should be spent.

Northern New Mexico Resource Advisory Committee advising the Carson, Cibola, and Santa Fe National Forests in Cibola, McKinley, Mora, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, San Miguel, Taos, and Torrance Counties.  Individuals interested in serving on the northern New Mexico RAC are encouraged to make direct contact with:

Ignacio Peralta, Carson N.F. Coordinator, 575-758-6344 iperalta@fs.fed.us
Ruben Montes, Santa Fe N.F. Coordinator, 505-438-5356, rmontes@fs.fed.us
Diana M Trujillo, Designated Federal Official (DFO), 575-536-2250, dmtrujillo@fs.fed.us
Mark M. Chavez, Cibola N.F. Contact, 505-346-3878, mchavez@fs.fed.us

Members of a RAC must reside within the State in which the committee has jurisdiction and, to the extent possible, ensure local representation in each category.  RAC members serve without pay but may elect to be reimbursed for travel expenses.  For more information log onto:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/secure_rural_schools/index.shtml

The following summarizes the interests to be represented on each RAC within three categories:

Category A, five persons who represent:
1.        organized labor or non-timber forest product harvester groups;
2.        developed outdoor recreation, off highway vehicle users, or commercial recreation activities;

4.        commercial timber industry;
5.        hold Federal grazing or other land use permits, or represent nonindustrial private forest land owners, within the area for which the committee is organized.

Category B, five persons who represent:
1.        nationally recognized environmental organizations;
2.        regionally or locally recognized environmental organizations;
3.        dispersed recreational activities;
4.        archaeological and historical interests;
