Mountainair NM presents Native American Skies, a Star Party at the Gran Quivira ruins for the
Centennial, October 16, 6 pm
Artist's conception of how Gran Quivira looked 430 years ago
The Lake County Astronomical Society of Illinois and the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument will be co-hosting a Star Party at Gran Quivira. The theme of the event will be Native American Skies. Interpretive astronomy programs featuring powerful telescopes for viewing heavenly bodies will be accompanied by Native American stories about the night sky. In addition to the Gran Quivira Centennial, 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy. The event is free.
Ernie Dogwolf Lovato, Mestizo Story Teller and Native Flute Player, will play the flute as he tells stories about the night sky.
To reduce light interference from vehicle headlights, there will be free off-site parking and shuttles to the ruins. Park at the Gran Quivira Church near the site entrance and take a free shuttle to the ruins.
RSVP by calling 505 847 2585 ext. 0, requested but not required. Dress warmly. Should the weather prevent night sky viewing on October 16, we will try again on October 17.
No entry fees. Contact: Dean Watkins, 505 847 2585 extension 0
