Forest Closures Still in Effect

Mountainair, NM – March 17, 2008: As Easter weekend approaches, the Mountainair Ranger District would like to remind the public that there are still areas of the forest that remain closed due to either fire or winter closures. Areas that are open and available for hiking or camping include:

  1. Tajique Campground
  2. Albuquerque Trailhead
  3. Cerro Grande Trailhead
  4. Bosque Trailhead
  5. Trail Canyon Trailhead

Although these areas remain open, Cerro Grande, Bosque and Trail Canyon trailheads as well as New Canyon Campground may only be accessible by 4 wheel drive.

Areas that remain under the Ojo Peak Fire Rehabilitation Closure include:

  1. Pine Shadow Trailhead
  2. Cottonwood Trailhead
  3. Kayser Mill Trailhead
  4. Ox Canyon Trailhead
  5. Box Trail
  6. Forest Road #422
  7. Forest Road #275

Areas that remain closed due to seasonal winter closures include:

  1. Fourth of July Campground
  2. Red Canyon Campground
  3. Capilla Peak Campground
  4. Forest Road #253 will be closed at the forest boundary
  5. Forest Road #321
  6. Forest Road #245 past New Canyon Campground
  7. New Canyon Campground

The anticipated opening of these areas is early April, however this is weather dependent.
