East Thunderbird Rx a Success

Arlene T Perea, atperea@fs.fed.us, writes:

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you a brief update on the East Thunderbird Prescribed burn today.  Everything went very well.  Ignitions ended around 4pm.  Smoke was very visible throughout the Manzano Mountains and Estancia Valley, but the burn was definitely a success.  Approximately 90 of the estimated 120 planned acres were burned.  The decision was made to hold off on the last 30-40 acres until conditions allow it to burn cooler as it is a red needle slash area.  Overall, burn managers were very pleased and felt that all burn objectives were met.  Fire personnel will continue monitoring and mopping up the fire area throughout the week.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me or respond to this email.

Thank you to those of you who called the office and provided new email contact information.  To those of you who are new to my list as of this evening, please respond to this email to let me know that you were properly added to my email contact list.  You will now continue to receive any district updates that I send out, including prescribed fire information.

Thanks  -  Arlene

East Thunderbird Prescribed Fire

From Arlene T Perea, atperea@fs.fed.us, Monday, November 09, 2009 4:38 PM

East Thunderbird Prescribed Burn Scheduled

The Mountainair Ranger District has been closely monitoring fuel and weather conditions. It now seems that we have hit the proper ventilation categories that are conducive to burning. The Mountainair Ranger District will be implementing the East Thunderbird Prescribed Burn.

The burn will be in a fuel wood area locally known as the Thunderbird area. This area was thinned within the Thunderbird Ecosystem Management area south of Forest Road #275 about 10 miles northwest of Mountainair. The burn is planned for November 10th and 11th. We will be burning as weather and ventilation allow and when the proper fire personnel are in place. For more information call 505-847-2990 or email atperea@fs.fed.us

Prescribed burning planned

From Arlene Perea, Information, Mountainair District, Forest Service

As was stated in my news release last week, we are still planning two prescribed burns on the district.  The weather window that we are waiting for is a very small window, not because of fire danger, but because of smoke.  We are, so far, not falling within the proper ventilation categories to burn.  We will continue monitoring the ventilation categories closely.  This being the case, I just wanted everyone to be aware that there is the possibility of burning at a moments notice as long as we have the proper personnel and resources in place.  We know that Wednesday is now out of the question, but we will be looking for a burn window throughout the end of the week and weekend.  I will send out another email if we hit our window and are able to burn.  I will also be calling residents who live in close proximity of the burn.  As always, feel free to call me or reply to this email with any comments or concerns.
